BOOK REVIEW: Diviners by Libba Bray

Just finished Diviners by Libba Bray and what can I say....it blew me away! It is a fabulously well written, detail-packed book that easily transports the reader back in time to New York City in the times of the Ziegfield girls, speakeasies and bob flapper haircuts. The main character, Evie O'Neill, has a special talent, one that gets her kicked out of her home in Ohio and results in her going to live in the big city of New York with her Uncle Will. Evie is more than thrilled with the prospect of a change in scenery. Evie is a free-spirited, fun, and playful girl that wants nothing more than to find fun and excitement in NYC. She does indeed find fun ...but also much, much more.  Evie meets a colorful cast of characters including her new best friend Mable, who she call Pie-Face, Jericho, a man that her Uncle Will has taken under his wings (with his own bizarre secret), Sam the pickpocket, Theta (a Ziegfield girl) and Henry, a neighbor in the apartment complex where she lives with Will and Jericho. Evie's talent would scare off some people...she can hold an object and "see" a person's history and secrets from that object. This talent does come into play in the storyline. Murders, mysticism, occult, prophecies and more fill in the story.  The plot arcs are many and the interwoven stories of the diverse and well-developed characters are perfectly placed. Once again, a brilliant work by Libba Bray. The book is very "meaty" packed with so much that you will sink your teeth in and not want to put it down until you are done.
